CCT Brings Rock Opera to the Stage

February 3, 2006 is opening night for Jesus Christ Superstar, a stirring and provocative rock opera for all generations. Caribbean Community Theatre (CCT) will present Jesus Christ Superstar on Friday and Saturday evenings for three weekends, from February 3 through February 18, with curtain time at 8:00 p.m.  There will be a Sunday matinee on February 12 at 4:00 p.m. All shows are held at the NEW CCT Theater at #18 Estate Orange Grove, Christiansted, St. Croix. Theatergoers should arrive early for best seating as reservations will not be taken for this production.

Ticket prices are $15 for adults and $8 for students. CCT also offers a special discount for church groups on a first come, first served basis: $12 per ticket if at least 20 tickets are purchased in advance.

With music written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice, Jesus Christ Superstar chronicles the last seven days in the life of Jesus of Nazareth as seen through the eyes of his disciple, Judas. The use of contemporary music brings home to a modern audience the events of the Gospels as they must have seemed to Christ’s ardent followers and to His equally passionate enemies. The stirring score, which includes the title song and Mary Magdalene’s “I Don’t Know How to Love Him,” is by turns driving and majestic, satirical and tender.

Jesus Christ Superstar is directed by Lorraine Durand with music direction by Kathleen Dodge-DeHaven. David James stars as Jesus, with Lionel Downer as Judas, and Natalie Hollins as Mary Magdalene. CCT welcomes a number of new members to the Superstar cast, along with many talented veterans.
